Useful walking directions:
Begin on Nichols road.
Enter St Mary’s cemetery at the end of the road, meander through the cemetery, coming to the North corner.
Follow the (steep downhill) footpath down to the entrance of St Michael’s cemetery. (Most of the footpath has a handrail, but not at the very top where it is narrow and likes to hide – look out for it!)
Meet Rivelin Valley Road at the bottom of the footpath and cross over.
Turn left and walk South along Rivelin Valley Road until you meet the entrance to Rivelin Valley Park. Toilets available here.
Beyond the café and toilets, turn left and follow the path around the back of Roscoe Allotments.
Eventually a hard left turn will bring you back out at Rivelin Valley Road.
Turn left onto Rivelin Valley Road and proceed along until you see a footpath leading into the woods on the other side of the road.
Follow this path through the woods. This will bring you out onto Bole Hill Road.
Turn left onto Bole hill road for a short distance. On the right you will see an entrance to a footpath leading up a steep hill.
Follow this footpath past the allotments. This will bring you out on a gravel path behind St. Antony’s Road.
Turn left and walk to the end of the path, and turn left again onto Tinker Lane.
At the end of Tinker Lane, turn right onto Bole Hill Road.
Take the first left onto Waller Road, which will take you back to the start on Nichols Road.
Alternative routes for the mud and scrambling inclined (in red on the map)
1: At step 4, instead of proceeding down to Rivelin Valley Road, detour through St Michael’s cemetery. At the far end of the cemetery wander into the woods and meander through to find a way back down to Rivelin Valley Road. There are no established footpaths back down to the road here and you will probably need to scramble a bit, but the woods are lovely and it’s worth it.
2: At step 6, carry on a little until you meet the river path. Turn left and follow the river along, turning left beyond the allotments to meet the path again at step 7.
